The Chernoff-Bobrick family is a microcosm of America: Marguerite Chernoff was the daughter of a Swiss mother and the French Consul to Chihuahua; Samuel Chernoff was a Russian immigrant to Mexico. They came to Albuquerque in search of a better life for their children, and were beguiled by the Native cultures of the Southwest. Through personal contact, when buying their work, they became fast friends with such legendary artists as Maria Martinez, of black pottery fame, and painter Pablita Velarde, among many others. Today, their son-in-law, Wayne Bobrick upholds the same rigorous standards, as he and his staff individually choose each piece of decorative or wearable art from the work brought in by an artist. “We buy as if we were keeping each piece ourselves. Our customers trust us to be as careful and choosy as they are," he says.. After all this time, Wright's purchases extraordinary work from two and three generations of artists’ families. Just as in trading posts of old, we entertain the children, write references or legal letters when needed, and generally serve as meeting-place central when people come into town.
